OUFM — Thinking: Definition and Context (v2)
Definition
Thinking is the process in which a system relates retained states within a field of content under directional pressure.
This is the substrate-level definition — it does not require the direction to ever change. A fixed-strategy calculation, a proof carried out to completion without revising approach, and a person following a settled train of reasoning are all thinking under this definition.
Adaptive thinking is thinking in which the directional pressure is observably revised at least once, in light of the outcomes of the relating — the system doesn’t just pursue a fixed direction, it redirects based on what the relating turns up.
Substrate (four minimum conditions)
All four are needed for anything recognizable as thinking:
- Field of content — something present to be related (external, internal, or self-referential).
- Retention of traces — enough of a prior state persists that a change can be related to what came before, rather than being a disconnected event.
- Capacity to relate / transform states — comparing, ordering, combining, rejecting, projecting.
- Directional pressure — some “toward-ness”: a question, a need, a preference, curiosity. Even weak or diffuse counts, but it must be present — this is what keeps thinking from collapsing into free association.
Adaptive thinking (the meta-capacity)
The system can treat the outcome of relating as new information that revises the directional pressure itself — the specific path, method, or approach, not necessarily the ultimate goal.
Working criterion: at least one observed redirection during the episode — a moment where the direction actually changed because of what the relating produced. “Observed” means observable to the system itself, either at the time or recognized in retrospect — not a claim that it “could have” happened, and not a requirement for third-party verification. If you can point to a moment where direction shifted in response to an outcome, the meta-capacity was exercised. If it never shifts across the whole episode, you don’t have evidence for it.
What this excludes and includes
- Rigid rumination / compulsion: thinking (the substrate is present — directional pressure exists) but non-adaptive — the meta-capacity is absent or suppressed, so direction never updates despite the outcomes of relating. This is thinking that’s stuck, not a failure to think.
- Free association / pure drift: not thinking — directional pressure is absent or too weak to constrain anything. Relating happens, but nothing is being aimed at.
- Loose brainstorming, associative scanning, daydreaming with a faint thread of purpose: thinking, and usually adaptive thinking — weak directional pressure is still directional pressure, and these modes typically show visible redirection as candidates appear. There’s no fixed tightness threshold separating loose thinking from free association; the boundary is whether directional pressure is present at all, not how tightly constrained the relating is.
Connection to the phenomenological minimum
Thinking is the same triadic structure as navigation, turned inward:
- What is there → the field of content.
- What I want → the directional pressure.
- What I can do → the capacity to relate, compare, transform, project.
Retention supplies the temporal continuity that makes the whole operation possible — the trace that lets one state be related to another.
Scope note: locus
For OUFM’s core use case — an individual explaining their own experience — the locus of thinking stays inside that person’s own phenomenology. Tools, conversations, and written notes can be part of the field of content, and can carry retention, but are not treated as co-thinkers.

Substrate-level thinking has no onset problem — it doesn’t depend on a feedback loop having already run. Only the adaptive classification is loop-dependent: you can’t certify that an episode was adaptive before at least one relate → outcome → redirect cycle has completed. So an episode can be recognized as thinking from its first moment; whether it counts as adaptive thinking is something you can only tell once it’s been running for a while.
Place in the adaptive cycle (observing — feeling — thinking — acting)
Thinking is the phase where the system relates its own retained states, rather than acting directly on the environment or simply registering it.
- Feeling and thinking stay distinct phases, but the output of one can become input to the other while the overall process continues. As candidates emerge during relating, they carry a felt quality — some feel promising, some feel dead — and that felt signal can feed back into how the direction gets revised. This is a feedback channel between phases, not a collapse of the phase boundary.
- Modes are configurations, not additional primitives. Brainstorming, categorizing, analytical thinking, visualizing, de Bono’s Six Hats — the same substrate run with different settings, along dimensions like: constraint tightness, directional target, representational medium (verbal / visual / spatial), temporal horizon, degree of awareness, and tolerance for ambiguity.
Awareness / deliberateness
A separate spectrum from adaptivity. Thinking can run largely pre-consciously (automatic mode) or under deliberate steering (the system actively monitors and can intervene in the relating). A person can be highly aware of thinking they didn’t deliberately initiate, and can deliberately start a search whose detailed processing stays outside awareness. Whether that thinking turns out to be adaptive is an independent question from how aware or deliberate it was.
