OUFM – Holding a Tension

Before you begin

Sit somewhere quiet. You need a few minutes without interruption.

This practice works with something specific: a real situation where you felt pulled in two directions at once — where part of you wanted to act from your own center, and another part wanted to go along with what the situation or the people around you were asking for.

Take a moment to identify that situation. It doesn’t need to be dramatic. A meeting where you stayed quiet when you had something to say. A conversation where you agreed with something you didn’t actually agree with. A moment where you felt yourself disappearing into what someone else needed, while your own direction faded into the background.

Hold that situation loosely in mind. You’re not going to solve it. You’re going to feel its structure.


1. Notice the two poles

In the situation you chose, two things were present simultaneously:

Agency — the part of you that had its own direction. A perspective, a need, an impulse toward something specific. Something that was yours, that came from your own center rather than from what the situation was demanding.

Participation — the pull to go along, to attune, to let the situation or the other people set the direction. Not weakness exactly — something more like responsiveness. The genuine capacity to be affected by what is around you.

Both were real. Both were present at the same time.

Sit with that for a moment. Not judging which was right. Just feeling that both were genuinely there — two real pulls operating simultaneously in the same moment.


2. Feel where you landed

In that situation, where did you actually end up?

Most people have a habitual tendency — a pole they move toward automatically when the tension becomes uncomfortable. Some people default to agency: they assert, decide, direct, sometimes before they’ve fully taken in what the situation actually needs. Others default to participation: they attune, accommodate, go along, sometimes losing their own thread entirely in the process.

Neither is wrong as a tendency. Both become costly when they run automatically — when you land at one pole not because the situation called for it but because that’s what your Layer 4 patterns always do.

Feel honestly: in the situation you chose, did you land where you actually wanted to be? Or did you end up at one pole because the tension became too uncomfortable to stay inside?

Don’t judge the answer. Just locate it.


3. Feel what it cost

Now feel what it cost to land where you did.

If you defaulted to participation — lost your own thread, went along, stayed quiet when you had something to say — what did that cost? Not abstractly. In that specific situation. A slight hollowness afterward. A low-level frustration that lingered. The sense of having been present but not quite there.

If you defaulted to agency — pushed, decided, directed before fully taking in what was present — what did that cost? Something missed. A response from the other person that didn’t land the way you expected. A sense of having moved too fast past something that needed more time.

The cost is not punishment. It is information. It is the tension telling you that something was left out — that one pole was active and the other wasn’t getting enough space.

Stay with that felt cost for a moment. It is the most honest signal the tension produces.


4. Go back into the tension

Now go back into that situation in your mind — but this time, don’t resolve it.

Feel both poles present simultaneously. Your own direction, your own perspective, what you actually wanted or needed. And the genuine pull of the situation, the other people, what they needed or expected.

Don’t move toward either pole. Just stay inside the gap between them.

This is uncomfortable. That discomfort is not a sign that something is wrong. It is what the tension actually feels like when you stop collapsing it prematurely. The tension is alive precisely because both poles are real — because your own agency matters and because genuine responsiveness to others matters. Neither can be dismissed without losing something real.

Stay here for longer than feels comfortable. Notice what happens when you don’t resolve it immediately.

Something usually shifts — not a solution, but a slight clarification. A sense of what the situation actually called for, separate from what habit produced. Sometimes a third option becomes visible that wasn’t there when you were trying to choose between the two poles.


5. Notice Layer 4 running

Underneath the tension, something older is shaping how you respond to it.

The habitual pole you default to didn’t arrive from nowhere. It consolidated from repeated past experience — situations where one response worked, or where one response was the only one that felt safe, and that pattern then became the automatic setting for all future situations that feel similar.

That consolidation was not a mistake. It was adaptive at some point. The question is whether it still fits — whether the current situation actually calls for that response, or whether the pattern is running on its own momentum regardless of what is actually present.

Notice: in the situation you chose, was your habitual response appropriate to what was actually there? Or was it a Layer 4 pattern answering a different situation from the past?

You don’t need to answer definitively. Just holding the question open is enough.


6. Practice staying inside it

Now try something small.

Bring the situation to mind one more time. Feel both poles — agency and participation — simultaneously present. And this time, instead of waiting for the tension to resolve, practice simply staying inside it for a few breaths.

Not forcing either pole. Not collapsing into one. Just — here is my own direction, and here is the genuine pull of the situation, and I can hold both without needing to decide right now.

Notice what that feels like in the body. It may feel like suspension — neither here nor there. It may feel like a kind of alertness, a heightened presence. It may feel simply uncomfortable in a way that is different from the discomfort of having already collapsed into one pole.

That quality — of staying inside the tension without resolving it prematurely — is what the model calls regulatory flexibility. Not balance exactly. Not splitting the difference. The capacity to remain in contact with both poles long enough for the situation itself to indicate which direction is actually called for.


7. The other tensions

Agency ↔ Participation is one of three regulatory tensions in the model. The other two have the same structure:

Coherence ↔ Openness — the pull between maintaining a familiar structure that works and remaining available to what is new or disruptive. You may recognize this in situations where you held on to a plan or a belief longer than the evidence warranted — or where you stayed so open that nothing cohered into action.

Differentiation ↔ Interdependence — the pull between needing your own space, your own ground, your own distinct center — and the genuine need for contact, belonging, and connection with others. Too much differentiation and you become isolated. Too much interdependence and your own center dissolves into others.

Each tension has the same basic practice: locate which pole you’re at, feel what it costs, go back into the gap, stay there longer than is comfortable, and notice what clarifies.

The tensions are not problems to solve. They are the permanent structure of being someone who is both a distinct self and genuinely embedded in a world of other people and changing situations. The capacity to stay inside them — rather than collapsing automatically into one pole — is one of the more difficult and more useful things this model offers.


8. Carry it forward

When you finish, notice whether the situation you worked with feels slightly different — not resolved, but perhaps more visible in its structure.

Carry that quality of noticing into the next situation where you feel pulled in two directions. See if you can catch the moment just before you collapse into your habitual pole — and stay inside the tension for just a little longer than usual.

Not permanently. Not heroically. Just slightly longer than habit requires.

That small extension is where something new becomes possible.


The regulatory tensions — Agency ↔ Participation, Coherence ↔ Openness, Differentiation ↔ Interdependence — run through all layers of the model simultaneously. They are most visible at Layer 3, where the adaptive cycle is actively negotiating between self and environment. But they are rooted in the ontological minimum of Layer 0: the asymmetric impulse and first registering are themselves a polarity — initiating and receiving, direction and sensitivity — present from the very beginning of any process. The tensions are not added on top of the model. They are the model’s basic structure made felt.
